Chapter 30: Rāma Allows Sītā to Follow Him to the Forest
Text 2.30.2
सा तमुत्तमसंविग्ना सीता विपुलवक्षसम्।
प्रणयाच्चाभिमानाच्च परिचिक्षेप राघवम्॥
sā tam uttama-saṁvignā sītā vipula-vakṣasam
praṇayāc cābhimānāc ca paricikṣepa rāghavam
sā tam = the; uttama-saṁvignā = greatly agitated; sītā = Sītā; vipula-vakṣasam = broad-chested; praṇayāt ca = out of love; abhimānāt = possessiveness; ca = and; paricikṣepa = derided; rāghavam = Rāghava.
Sītā, greatly agitated, derided the broad-chested Rāghava out of love and possessiveness.
Sītā-devī was greatly agitated, that is, trembling. “Broad-chested” indicates that Rāghava was a hero. Why did she deride such a hero? “Out of love and possessiveness,” that is, with the [loving] conception, “He is mine.” Abhimānāc ca also indicates that she was angry. She was lovingly angry with Him.
