Chapter 34: Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa and Sītā Meet Daśaratha
Text 2.34.25
प्रतीक्षमाणमव्यग्रमनुज्ञां जगतीपतेः।
उवाच राजा सम्प्रेक्ष्य वनवासाय राघवम्॥
pratīkṣamāṇam avyagram anujñāṁ jagatī-pateḥ
uvāca rājā samprekṣya vana-vāsāya rāghavam
pratīkṣamāṇam = who was waiting; avyagram = the undisturbed; anujñām = for the permission; jagatī-pateḥ = from him; uvāca = spoke [as follows]; rājā = the king; samprekṣya = looking at; vana-vāsāya = to go to the forest; rāghavam = Rāghava.
Looking at the undisturbed Rāghava who was waiting for permission to go to the forest from him, the king spoke [as follows].1
1 Jagatī-pateḥ (literally “from the ruler of earth”) indicates that Rāma waited to take permission from Daśaratha in Daśaratha’s capacity as the king.
