Chapter 37: Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa and Sītā Wear Clothes of Bark

महामात्रवचः श्रुत्वा रामो दशरथं तदा।
अभ्यभाषत वाक्यं तु विनयज्ञो विनीतवत्॥
mahā-mātra-vacaḥ śrutvā rāmo daśarathaṁ tadā
abhyabhāṣata vākyaṁ tu vinayajño vinītavat
mahā-mātra-vacaḥ = the words of the senior minister Siddhārtha; śrutvā = hearing; rāmaḥ = Rāma; daśaratham = to Daśaratha; tadā abhyabhāṣata = spoke; vākyam tu = the following words; vinayajñaḥ = who knew about humility; vinītavat = in humility.
Hearing the words of the senior minister Siddhārtha, Rāma, who knew about humility, spoke the following words to Daśaratha in humility.
GLOSS. Vinītavat [literally means “as if in humility” and so] indicates that this exhibition of humility by the Supreme Lord is to teach the world.
