चीराण्यपास्याज्जनकस्य कन्या नेयं प्रतिज्ञा मम दत्तपूर्वा।
यथासुखं गच्छतु राजपुत्री वनं समग्रा सह सर्वरत्नैः॥
cīrāṇy apāsyāj janakasya kanyā
neyaṁ pratijñā mama datta-pūrvā
yathā-sukhaṁ gacchatu rāja-putrī
vanaṁ samagrā saha sarva-ratnaiḥ
cīrāṇi = these ascetic garments; apāsyāt = may give up; janakasya = Janaka’s; kanyā = daughter; na = not; iyam = this; pratijñā mama datta-pūrvā = I did promise; yathā-sukham = happily; gacchatu = let go; rāja-putrī = the king’s daughter; vanam = to the forest; samagrā = with clothes, ornaments; saha sarva-ratnaiḥ = and all kinds of excellent items [of need].
“May Janaka’s daughter give up these ascetic garments. I did not promise you this. Let the king’s daughter happily go to the forest with clothes, ornaments and all kinds of excellent items [of need].
“I did not promise you this” means “I did not promise you that Sītā should wear ascetic garments and go to the forest.”
