Chapter 38: Rāma Requests the King to Take Care of His Mother Kausalyā
Text 2.38.18

इमां महेन्द्रोपम जातगर्धिनीं तथा विधातुं जननीं ममार्हसि।
यथा वनस्थे मयि शोककर्शिता न जीवितं न्यस्य यमक्षयं व्रजेत्॥

imāṁ mahendropama jāta-gardhinīṁ
tathā vidhātuṁ jananīṁ mamārhasi
yathā vanasthe mayi śoka-karśitā
na jīvitaṁ nyasya yama-kṣayaṁ vrajet

imām = this lady; mahā-indra-upama = O king equal to the great Indra; jāta-gardhinīm = hankers to [constantly] see her son; tathā = that; vidhātum = take care of; jananīm = mother; mama = My; arhasi = you should; yathā = in such a manner; vanasthe mayi = about Me being in the forest; śoka-karśitā = and is emaciated in distress; na = not; jīvitam = her life; nyasya = she does give up; yama-kṣayam = to the abode of Yamarāja; vrajet = and go.

O king equal to the great Indra, you should take care of My mother in such a manner that she does not give up her life and go to the abode of Yamarāja. This lady hankers to [constantly] see her son and is emaciated in distress about Me being in the forest.

GLOSS. Jāta-gardhinīm indicates that Kausalyā-devī hankered to live with her son Rāma.
