ततस्त्वयोध्या रहिता महात्मना पुरन्दरेणेव मही सपर्वता।
चचाल घोरं भयशोकपीडिता सनागयोधाश्वगणा ननाद च॥
tatas tv ayodhyā rahitā mahātmanā
purandareṇeva mahī saparvatā
cacāla ghoraṁ bhaya-śoka-pīḍitā
sanāga-yodhāśva-gaṇā nanāda ca
tataḥ tu = then; ayodhyā = Ayodhyā; rahitā = bereft of; mahā-ātmanā = the great soul Rāma; purandareṇa = [without] Purandara; iva = just as; mahī = the earth; saparvatā = with its mountains; cacāla ghoram = became terribly agitated; bhaya-śoka-pīḍitā = became tormented by fear and lamentation; sanāga-yodha-aśva-gaṇā = with its elephants, footsoldiers and horses; nanāda = cried; ca = and.
Bereft of the great soul Rāma, Ayodhyā then became tormented by fear and lamentation and cried with its elephants, footsoldiers and horses just as the earth with its mountains becomes terribly agitated by Indra when he breaks up mountains [with his thunderbolt].1
