tatas tu tamasā-tīraṁ ramyam āśritya rāghavaḥ
sītām udvīkṣya saumitrim idaṁ vacanam abravīt

tataḥ tu tamasā-tīram = the bank of Tamasā; ramyam = pleasant; āśritya = having resorted to; rāghavaḥ = Rāghava; sītām = Sītā; udvīkṣya = looked at and; saumitrim = to Sumitrā’s son; idam = the following; vacanam = words; abravīt = spoke.

Having resorted to the pleasant bank of Tamasā, Rāghava looked at Sītā and spoke the following words to Sumitrā’s son.

Rāmacandra looked at Sītā-devī while speaking to Lakṣmaṇa to indicate that what He is going to speak should not be a cause for anxiety for Sītā-devī too.
