Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 50: The Meeting of Rāma and Guha
Text 2.50.48

ततश्चीरोत्तरासङ्गः सन्ध्यामन्वास्य पश्चिमाम्।
जलमेवाददे भोज्यं लक्ष्मणेनाहृतं स्वयम्॥

tataś cīrottarāsaṅgaḥ sandhyām anvāsya paścimām
jalam evādade bhojyaṁ lakṣmaṇenāhṛtaṁ svayam

tataḥ = then; cīra-uttara-āsaṅgaḥ = wearing an upper cloth of bark; sandhyām = sandhyā-vandana; anvāsya = He performed and then; paścimām = the evening; jalam = water; eva = alone; ādade = drank; bhojyam = as His food; lakṣmaṇena = Lakṣmaṇa; āhṛtam = that fetched for Him; svayam = personally.

Then, wearing an upper cloth of bark, He performed the evening sandhyā-vandana and then drank water alone as His food that Lakṣmaṇa personally fetched for Him.

GLOSS. Jalam eva indicates that Rāma’s fasting was because He had reached a sacred spot since it has been stated in the Purāṇas and so on that even men whose fathers are alive should fast when they directly reach Gaṅgā.
