Chapter 52: Rāma Crosses the Gaṅgā on Guha’s Boat
Text 2.52.20
इति ब्रुवन्नात्मसमं सुमन्त्रः सारथिस्तदा।
दृष्ट्वा दूरगतं रामं दुःखार्तो रुरुदे चिरम्॥
iti bruvann ātma-samaṁ sumantraḥ sārathis tadā
dṛṣṭvā dūra-gataṁ rāmaṁ duḥkhārto rurude ciram
iti = thus; bruvan = while speaking; ātma-samam = who was as dear to him as his very soul; sumantraḥ = Sumantra; sārathiḥ = the charioteer; tadā dṛṣṭvā = noticed that; dūra-gatam = had gone far away; rāmam = Rāma; duḥkha-ārtaḥ = anguished in distress; rurude = then cried; ciram = for a long time.
While speaking thus, the charioteer noticed that Rāma who was as dear to him as his very soul had gone far away. Anguished in distress, Sumantra then cried for a long time.
