Chapter 52: Rāma Crosses the Gaṅgā on Guha’s Boat
Text 2.52.40
सराममपि तावन्मे रथं दृष्ट्वा तदा जनः।
विना रामं रथं दृष्ट्वा विदीर्येतापि सा पुरी॥
sarāmam api tāvan me rathaṁ dṛṣṭvā tadā janaḥ
vinā rāmaṁ rathaṁ dṛṣṭvā vidīryetāpi sā purī
sarāmam api = with Rāma; tāvat me ratham = my chariot; dṛṣṭvā = having previously seen; tadā janaḥ = the people; vinā rāmam = now without Rāma; ratham = the chariot; dṛṣṭvā = upon seeing; vidīryeta = will become torn in grief; api = and; sā purī = the city.
Having previously seen my chariot with Rāma, upon now seeing the chariot now without Rāma, the people and the city will become torn in grief.
“The city” refers to the beasts and other nonhumans residing in the city.
