Chapter 59: Sumantra Describes the Agony of all Creatures in the Country

स तेन राजा दुःखेन भृशमर्पितचेतनः।
अवगाढः सुदुष्पारं शोकसागरमब्रवीत्॥
sa tena rājā duḥkhena bhṛśam arpita-cetanaḥ
avagāḍhaḥ suduṣpāraṁ śoka-sāgaram abravīt
saḥ = he; tena = to the; rājā = the king’s; duḥkhena = distress [of separation from Rāma]; bhṛśam = completely; arpita-cetanaḥ = mind was given over; avagāḍhaḥ = and had drowned; suduṣpāram = into an unfathomable deep; śoka-sāgaram = ocean of distress; abravīt = he then spoke [as follows].
The king’s mind was completely given over to the distress [of separation from Rāma] and he had drowned into an unfathomable deep ocean of distress. He then spoke [as follows].
The king’s mind burned in distress like a burning piece of iron.
