यदा तु दीनं कथयन्नराधिपः प्रियस्य पुत्रस्य विवासनातुरः।
गतेऽर्धरात्रे भृशदुःखपीडितस्तदा जहौ प्राणमुदारदर्शनः॥
yadā tu dīnaṁ kathayan narādhipaḥ
priyasya putrasya vivāsanāturaḥ
gate ’rdha-rātre bhṛśa-duhkha-pīḍitas
tadā jahau prāṇam udāra-darśanaḥ
yadā tu = when; dīnam = in sorrow; kathayan = and thus spoke; nara-adhipaḥ = the king; priyasya = his beloved; putrasya = son’s; vivāsana-āturaḥ = became afflicted by exile; gate ardha-rātre = in the middle of the night; bhṛśa-duhkha-pīḍitaḥ = he became pained by extreme distress; tadā = then; jahau = gave up; prāṇam = his life; udāra-darśanaḥ = that soul of liberal vision.
When the king became afflicted by his beloved son’s exile and thus spoke in sorrow in the middle of the night, he became pained by extreme distress. That soul of liberal vision then gave up his life.1
