Chapter 69: Bharata’s Distressing Dreams
Text 2.69.5

स तैर्महात्मा भरतः सखिभिः प्रियवादिभिः।
गोष्ठीहास्यानि कुर्वद्भिर्न प्राहृष्यत राघवः॥

sa tair mahātmā bharataḥ sakhibhiḥ priya-vādibhiḥ
goṣṭhī-hāsyāni kurvadbhir na prāhṛṣyata rāghavaḥ

saḥ = the; taiḥ1 mahā-ātmā = great soul; bharataḥ = Bharata; sakhibhiḥ = [though] His friends; priya-vādibhiḥ = spoke sweet words [to Him]; goṣṭhī-hāsyāni = jokes in the assembly [in His presence]; kurvadbhiḥ = and made; na = not; prāhṛṣyata = did cheer up; rāghavaḥ = who descended from Raghu.

[Though] His friends spoke sweet words [to Him} and made jokes in the assembly [in His presence], Bharata, the great soul who descended from Raghu, did not cheer up.
