गुरुरेकः प्रजानां तु पिता मे सत्यविक्रमः।
पश्चिमं साधु सन्देशमिच्छामि श्रोतुमात्मनः।
इति पृष्टा यथातत्त्वं कैकेयी वाक्यमब्रवीत्॥
gurur ekaḥ prajānāṁ tu pitā me satya-vikramaḥ
paścimaṁ sādhu sandeśam icchāmi śrotum ātmanaḥ
iti pṛṣṭā yathā-tattvaṁ kaikeyī vākyam abravīt
guruḥ = spiritual advisor; ekaḥ = was the chief; prajānām tu = to the citizens; pitā = father; me = My; satya-vikramaḥ = and factually courageous; paścimam = his last; sādhu = properly; sandeśam = instructions; icchāmi = I want; śrotum = to hear; ātmanaḥ iti = for Me; pṛṣṭā = being thus questioned; yathā-tattvam = truthfully; kaikeyī = Kaikeyī; vākyam = the following words; abravīt = spoke.
“My father was the chief spiritual advisor to the citizens and factually courageous. I want to properly hear his last instructions for Me.” Being thus questioned, Kaikeyī spoke the following words truthfully.
When Bharata asked her thus, she replied in the next verse that the king did not remember Bharata [in his final moments] and that he had remembered Rāma before attaining Svarga.
