Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 97: Rāma Instructs Lakṣmaṇa
Text 2.97.5

धर्ममर्थं च कामं च पृथिवीं चापि लक्ष्मण।
इच्छामि भवतामर्थे एतत्प्रतिशृणोमि ते॥

dharmam arthaṁ ca kāmaṁ ca pṛthivīṁ cāpi lakṣmaṇa
icchāmi bhavatām arthe etat pratiśṛṇomi te

dharmam = dharma; artham ca = artha; kāmam ca = kāma; pṛthivīm = this land; ca api = and even; lakṣmaṇa = Lakṣmaṇa; icchāmi = I desire; bhavatām arthe = only for the sake of all of You, My brothers; etat pratiśṛṇomi te = I promise You this.

I desire dharma, artha, kāma and even this land only for the sake of all of You, My brothers.1 Lakṣmaṇa, I promise You this.

Artha here refers to [wealth] other than land, such as jewels. “I promise You this” means “I will never transgress what I have stated here.”

1 Lord Rāma is demonstrating how to function as a pariniṣṭhita who can be described as follows. A sinless person who desires loving service to the Lord with liberation from material existence, without desiring material enjoyment within Vedic dharma while progressing towards loving service to the Lord with liberation from material existence, will take one lifetime to have his prārabdha-karma nullified. Apart from executing his duties of spiritual dharma, he executes his duties of material dharma to inspire others to follow them. He will attain his cherished goal at the end of one lifetime. Readers can consult the writings of Śrīla Baladeva Vidyābhūṣaṇa for a better understanding of this.
