नेयं मम मही सौम्य दुर्लभा सागराम्बरा।
न हीच्छेयमधर्मेण शक्रत्वमपि लक्ष्मण॥
neyaṁ mama mahī saumya durlabhā sāgarāmbarā
na hīccheyam adharmeṇa śakratvam api lakṣmaṇa
na iyam = it is not; mama = for Me; mahī = to get this earth; saumya = gentle; durlabhā = difficult; sāgara-ambarā = dressed in her oceans; na hi iccheyam = but I would not want; adharmeṇa
= through adharma; śakratvam api = even the position of Indra; lakṣmaṇa = Lakṣmaṇa.
Gentle Lakṣmaṇa, it is not difficult for Me to get this earth dressed in her oceans, but I would not want even the position of Indra through adharma.1
1 “This earth dressed in her oceans” is a standard and elegant metaphor to describe Mother Earth and her oceans. In usages such as this, generally the word for “earth” is pṛthivī which is feminine.
NOTE. The Supreme Personality of Godhead is fully self-sufficient and capable of achieving anything He wants. Yet He does not do anything that violates the revealed scriptures.
Prabhupāda explains this principle thus:
Since everything is in full opulence in the Personality of Godhead and is existing in full truth, there is no duty for the Supreme Personality of Godhead to perform. One who must receive the results of work has some designated duty, but one who has nothing to achieve within the three planetary systems certainly has no duty... Although He is above all the regulations of the revealed scriptures, He does not do anything that violates the revealed scriptures. (Bhagavad-gītā 3.22 purport)
