niveśya senāṁ tu vibhuḥ padbhyāṁ pādavatāṁ varaḥ
abhigantuṁ sa kākutstham iyeṣa guru-vartakam
niveśya = after settling; senām tu = His army; vibhuḥ = the mighty Bharata; padbhyām = by foot; pādavatām = of men; varaḥ = the best; abhigantum = to meet; saḥ1 kākutstham = the descendant of Kakutstha; iyeṣa = went; guru-vartakam = who followed the order of His authority.
After settling His army, the mighty Bharata, the best of men, went by foot to meet the descendant of Kakutstha who followed the order of His authority.1
Bharata’s meeting with Rāma is described in this chapter.
GLOSS. [The glossator reads guru-vartakaḥ instead of guru-vartakam indicating that Bharata] dealt with the descendant of Kakutstha as if He was Bharata’s father, for it is said that an elder brother is equal to one’s father: jyeṣṭha-bhrātā pituḥ samaḥ.
