Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 105: Rāma Consoles Bharata With Spiritual Instructions
Text 2.105.16

सर्वे क्षयान्ता निचयाः पतनान्ताः समुच्छ्रयाः।
संयोगा विप्रयोगान्ता मरणान्तं च जीवितम्॥

sarve kṣayāntā nicayāḥ patanāntāḥ samucchrayāḥ
saṁyogā viprayogāntā maraṇāntaṁ ca jīvitam

sarve = everything; kṣaya-antāḥ = ends in destruction; nicayāḥ = stored up; patana-antāḥ = ends up falling down; samucchrayāḥ = everyone elevated; saṁyogāḥ = relatives; viprayoga-antāḥ = end up being separated; maraṇa-antam ca = ends in death; jīvitam = even an excellent life.

Everything stored up ends in destruction. Everyone elevated ends up falling down. Relatives end up being separated. Even an excellent life ends in death.

Rāma then points out that there is no reason to lament about the death of Their father if They analyze the nature of objects that cannot be taken away [from those objects].

All the wealth that have been extensively stored up end in destruction, through thieves or [one’s own] desire or the king.1 Everyone elevated, even to the highest position like Brahmā and Indra, will lose his post at the end of his term of office. One’s relatives such as his sons and wives will end up being separated [from him]. Even an excellent life breaks up under unavoidable death.

This is spoken in consideration of Bharata who lamented due to His father’s death, to dissipate His lamentation. The first three lines are examples. The fourth line refers to Daśaratha’s death. Because his death was caused by time which cannot be avoided, Rāma implies that [Bharata] should not lament about it.

In the previous verse Rāma stated that His departure [from Ayodhyā] to the forest was not an independent act on His part but that it was an act of the Supreme Lord. In this verse, Rāma states that Daśaratha’s death is caused by time and therefore Bharata should not lament about his death too. Rāma elaborates on this from the next verse.

1 The accumulated money is stolen by thieves or used up according to one’s own desire or exacted in the form of taxes by the government.
