Chapter 108: Jābāli Speaks the Philosophy of Materialism
Text 2.108.16

दानसंवनना ह्येते ग्रन्था मेधाविभिः कृताः।
यजस्व देहि दीक्षस्व तपस्तप्यस्व संत्यज॥

dāna-saṁvananā hy ete granthā medhāvibhiḥ kṛtāḥ
yajasva dehi dīkṣasva tapas tapyasva santyaja

dāna-saṁvananāḥ = to trap [the unintelligent] into giving them charity 1; hi ete = [containing such injunctions,] these; granthāḥ = scriptures; medhāvibhiḥ = by clever people; kṛtāḥ = have been manufactured; yajasva = worship the devatās; dehi = give in charity; dīkṣasva = take initiation; tapaḥ = austerities; tapyasva = perform; santyaja = renounce the desire for money and so on.

“Worship the devatās. Take initiation. Perform austerities. Renounce the desire for money and so on. Give in charity!” [Containing such injunctions,] these scriptures have been manufactured by clever people to trap [the unintelligent] into giving them charity.

“Clever people” here refers to those clever enough to snatch others’ wealth.
