तत्र चैका महाभागा भार्गवं देववर्चसम्।
ववन्दे पद्मपत्राक्षी काङ्क्षिणी पुत्रमुत्तमम्।
एका गर्भविनाशाय सपत्न्यै सा गरं ददौ॥
tatra caikā mahā-bhāgā bhārgavaṁ deva-varcasam
vavande padma-patrākṣī kāṅkṣiṇī putram uttamam
ekā garbha-vināśāya sapatnyai sā garaṁ dadau
tatra ca ekā = one of Asita’s wife; mahā-bhāgā = who was greatly fortunate; bhārgavam = the son of Bhṛgu; deva-varcasam = who was lustrous like a celestial; vavande = beseeched; padma-patrākṣī = and whose eyes were like lotus leaves; kāṅkṣiṇī = for she hankered to give birth; putram = son; uttamam = to an excellent; ekā = other wife of Asita; garbha-vināśāya = to destroy the child in her womb; sapatnyai = to her; sā = the; garam = food mixed with poison; dadau = gave.
“One of Asita’s wives who was greatly fortunate and whose eyes were like lotus leaves, beseeched the son of Bhṛgu, who was lustrous like a celestial, for she hankered to give birth to an excellent son. The other wife of Asita gave food mixed with poison to her to destroy the child in her womb.
