Chapter 111: Rāma Agrees to Accept the Throne After Returning to Ayodhyā
Text 2.111.1
वसिष्ठस्तु तदा राममुक्त्वा राजपुरोहितः।
अब्रवीद्धर्मसंयुक्तं पुनरेवापरं वचः॥
vasiṣṭhas tu tadā rāmam uktvā rāja-purohitaḥ
abravīd dharma-saṁyuktaṁ punar evāparaṁ vacaḥ
vasiṣṭhaḥ tu = Vasiṣṭha; tadā = thus; rāmam = to Rāma; uktvā = having spoken; rāja-purohitaḥ = the royal priest; abravīt = spoke; dharma-saṁyuktam = in accordance with dharma; punaḥ eva = to Him again; aparam = other; vacaḥ = words.
Having spoken thus to Rāma, the royal priest Vasiṣṭha spoke to Him again other words in accordance with dharma.
Vasiṣṭha understood that Rāma had become silent in thought that the dharma followed by His dynasty [of only coronating the eldest son as the king] was to be applied unless instructed by one’s father otherwise. He then gives another reason to Rāma to return from the next verse.
