Chapter 111: Rāma Agrees to Accept the Throne After Returning to Ayodhyā

विक्रीतमाहितं क्रीतं यत्पित्रा जीवता मम।
न तल्लोपयितुं शक्यं मया वा भरतेन वा॥
vikrītam āhitaṁ krītaṁ yat pitrā jīvatā mama
na tal lopayituṁ śakyaṁ mayā vā bharatena vā
vikrītam = pledged; āhitam = had given; krītam = or taken; yat = anything that; pitrā = father; jīvatā = when he was alive; mama = My; na tat lopayitum śakyam = can take away; mayā = I; vā = neither; bharatena vā = nor Bharata.
Neither I nor Bharata can take away anything that My father had given, pledged or taken when he was alive.
Daśaratha had given Rāma residence in the forest and taken the kingdom. He had also given Bharata the kingdom while pledging Rāma’s residence in the forest.
GLOSS. Rāma intended to convey this: “Neither Rāma nor Bharata can take away anything that My father had sold, honorably deposited [for safekeeping] or bought while he was alive because there is no distinction between Me and Bharata as his sons.” Rāma implied that the kingdom had been deposited with Kaikeyī [for safekeeping] for fourteen years.
