Chapter 1: Lord Rāma Meets the Sages of Daṇḍakāraṇya
Text 3.1.2

कुशचीरपरिक्षिप्तं ब्राह्म्या लक्ष्म्या समावृतम्।
यथा प्रदीप्तं दुर्दर्शं गगने सूर्यमण्डलम्॥

kuśa-cīra-parikṣiptaṁ brāhmyā lakṣmyā samāvṛtam
yathā
pradīptaṁ durdarśaṁ gagane sūrya-maṇḍalam

kuśa-cīra-parikṣiptam = kuśa grass and bark clothes were strewn all over the āśrama; brāhmyā = of Vedic studies and obedience to Vedic teachings; lakṣmyā = with the beauty; samāvṛtam = which was filled; yathā = the āśrama resembled; pradīptam = the blazing; durdarśam = that is so difficult to directly see; gagane = in the sky.; sūrya-maṇḍalam = sun disc.

Kuśa grass and bark clothes were strewn all over the āśrama which was filled with the beauty of Vedic studies and obedience to Vedic teachings.1 The āśrama resembled the blazing sun disc that is so difficult to directly see in the sky.

The āśrama was filled with kuśa grass that had been collected for the performance of fire sacrifices. The clothes of bark had been put in the sun after bathing so that they could dry. The āśrama resembled the sun disc in the sky, that is, it could not be attacked by the rākṣasas known as mandehas because they attack [only] when the sun rises and sets, not during the day.1

GLOSS. Brāhmyā lakṣmyā also indicates that the āśrama was filled with brahminical beauty.

1 This is because these ascetics were pure devotees of Lord Rāma who were fully surrendered unto His lotus feet. Anyone who is fully and purely engaged in bhagavad-bhakti is fully protected by the Supreme Lord as guaranteed by Lord Kṛṣṇa in Bhagavad-gītā 9.22.
