Chapter 1: Lord Rāma Meets the Sages of Daṇḍakāraṇya
Text 3.1.10
दिव्यज्ञानोपपन्नास्ते रामं दृष्ट्वा महर्षयः।।
अभ्यगच्छंस्तथा प्रीता वैदेहीं च यशस्विनीम्॥
divya-jñānopapannās te rāmaṁ dṛṣṭvā maha-rṣayaḥ
abhyagacchaṁs tathā prītā vaidehīṁ ca yaśasvinīm
divya-jñāna-upapannāḥ = endowed with divine knowledge; te = those; rāmam = Rāma; dṛṣṭvā = saw; mahā-ṛṣayaḥ = great sages; abhyagacchan = approached [them]; tathā = and; prītāḥ = with delight; vaidehīm = Vaidehī; ca = and; yaśasvinīm = the illustrious.
Endowed with divine knowledge, those great sages saw Rāma and the illustrious Vaidehī, and approached [them] with delight.
1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: divyaṁ loka-vilakṣaṇaṁ jñānaṁ. tena upapannā yuktāḥ.
Those sages were endowed with divine knowledge, that is, knowledge of the uncommon and the supernatural.1 In other words, they had knowledge of the past and the future. Specifically, they had realized the secrets of Rāma’s descent. [They knew that] Rāma was Lord Viṣṇu who had descended to kill Rāvaṇa, that Sītā was Lakṣmī and that Lakṣmaṇa was Rāma’s [plenary] portion.
NOTE. Lord Kṛṣṇa notes in Bhagavad-gītā (10.11) that He bestows divine knowledge upon His pure devotees:
teṣām evānukampārtham aham ajñāna-jaṁ tamaḥ
nāśayāmy ātma-bhāva-stho jñāna-dīpena bhāsvatā
“To show them special mercy, I, dwelling in their hearts, destroy with the shining lamp of knowledge the darkness born of ignorance.”
