Chapter 1: Lord Rāma Meets the Sages of Daṇḍakāraṇya
Text 3.1.17
धर्मपालो जनस्यास्य शरण्यस्त्वं महायशः।।
पूजनीयश्च मान्यश्च राजा दण्डधरो गुरुः॥
dharmapālo janasyāsya śaraṇyas tvaṁ mahā-yaśaḥ
pūjanīyaś ca mānyaś ca rājā daṇḍadharo guruḥ
dharmapālaḥ = protect varṇāśrama-dharma; janasya asya = us who are distressed; śaraṇyaḥ = You can shelter; tvam = You; mahā-yaśāḥ = You are of great fame; pūjanīyaḥ ca = worshippable as our Deity; mānyaḥ = and worthy of great respect; ca = and; rājā = as our king; daṇḍadharaḥ = and punisher [of miscreants]; guruḥ = guru.
You protect varṇāśrama-dharma. You can shelter us who are distressed. You are of great fame, worshippable as our Deity and guru, and worthy of great respect as our king and punisher [of miscreants].
