Chapter 1: Lord Rāma Meets the Sages of Daṇḍakāraṇya
Text 3.1.21
एवमुक्त्वा फलैर्मुलैः पुष्पैर्वन्यैश्च राघवम्।
अन्यैश्च विविधाहारैः सलक्ष्मणमपूजयन्॥
evam uktvā phalair mūlaiḥ puṣpair vanyaiś ca rāghavam
anyaiś ca vividhāhāraiḥ salakṣmaṇam apūjayan
evam = this; uktvā = having said; phalaiḥ = fruits; mūlaiḥ = roots; puṣpaiḥ = with flowers; vanyaiḥ ca = grown in the forest; rāghavam = Rāghava; anyaiḥ = other; ca = and; vividha-āhāraiḥ = eatables of various kinds; salakṣmaṇam = and Lakṣmaṇa; apūjayan = the sages honored.
Having said this, the sages honored Rāghava and Lakṣmaṇa with flowers, fruits, roots and other eatables of various kinds grown in the forest.
1 In other words, the sages honored Rāma with Sītā-devī.
The author then points out the activities of service rendered by those surrendered souls as appropriate [to the circumstance].
“Rāghava” includes Sītā-devī here because both of them together are the maintainers [of the surrendered servants of the Lord] and because they are inseparable like light and the source of light.1
