एवमुक्तस्तु सौमित्री राक्षस्या वाक्यकोविदः।
ततः शूर्पनखीं स्मित्वा लक्ष्मणो युक्तमब्रवीत्॥
evam uktas tu saumitrī rākṣasyā vākya-kovidaḥ
tataḥ śūrpanakhīṁ smitvā lakṣmaṇo yuktam abravīt
evam = thus; uktaḥ tu = when spoke; saumitriḥ = the son of Sumitrā; rākṣasyā = the rākṣasī; vākya-kovidaḥ = and expert in speech; tataḥ śūrpanakhīm = at the lady whose nails resembled winnowing fans; smitvā = smiled; lakṣmaṇaḥ = Lakṣmaṇa; yuktam = [the following] appropriate [words]; abravīt = and spoke.
When the rākṣasī spoke thus, Lakṣmaṇa, the son of Sumitrā and expert in speech, smiled at the lady whose nails resembled winnowing fans and spoke [the following] appropriate [words].1
1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: śūrpa iva nakho yasyāḥ sā śūrpanakhī saṁjñāyā avivakṣitatvāt “svāṅgāc copasarjanād asaṁyogopadhāt” iti ṅīṣ. asaṁjñātvād eva “pūrva-padāt saṁjñāyām” iti ṇatvābhāvāḥ.
