Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 18: Śūrpaṇakhā Disfigured
Text 3.18.12

को हि रूपमिदं श्रेष्ठं सन्त्यज्य वरवर्णिनि।
मानुषीषु वरारोहे कुर्याद्भावं विचक्षणः॥

ko hi rūpam idaṁ śreṣṭhaṁ santyajya vara-varṇini
mānuṣīṣu varārohe kuryād bhāvaṁ vicakṣaṇaḥ

kaḥ hi = which; rūpam = beauty; idam = this; śreṣṭham = excellent; santyajya = will give up and; vara-varṇini = lady of excellent complexion; mānuṣīṣu = human women; vara-ārohe = O beautiful; kuryāt bhāvam = love; vicakṣaṇaḥ = intelligent man.

O beautiful lady of excellent complexion, which intelligent man will give up this excellent beauty and love human women?1

1 This verse can also mean, “O beautiful lady of excellent complexion, which intelligent man will give up this excellent beauty among human women and love [You]?” Here Sītā is considered “human” because she has incarnated among humans and behaves like human women. Such a usage is abundantly found in the Vedic scriptures.
