Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 19: Khara Sends Fourteen Rākṣasas to Destroy Rāma
Text 3.19.20

एष में प्रथमः कामः कृतस्तात त्वया भवेत्।
तस्यास्तयोश्च रुधिरं पिबेयमहमाहवे॥

eṣa me prathamaḥ kāmaḥ kṛtas tāta tvayā bhavet
tasyās tayoś ca rudhiraṁ pibeyam aham āhave

eṣaḥ = this; me = of mine; prathamaḥ = foremost 2; kāmaḥ = desire; kṛtaḥ tāta = dear Khara; tvayā bhavet = please fulfill; tasyāḥ = [the blood] of that lady; tayoḥ = of the two [brothers]; ca = and; rudhiram = the blood; pibeyam = want to drink; aham = I; āhave = in battle.

Dear Khara, please fulfill this foremost desire of mine: I want to drink the blood of the two [brothers] in battle and [the blood] of that lady.1

1 This is further evidence that though Śūrpaṇakhā was attracted to Rāma’s beauty, she was not prema-mohitā or bewildered by selfless love for Him; rather she was kāma-mohitā–bewildered by selfish lust. How can one who factually loves someone ever think of harming that person?
