Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 22: Khara and Others Depart to kill Rāma
Text 3.22.2
तवावमानप्रभवः क्रोधोऽयमतुलो मम।
न शक्यते धारयितुं लवणाम्भ इवोत्थितम्॥
tavāvamāna-prabhavaḥ krodho ’yam atulo mama
na śakyate dhārayituṁ lavaṇāmbha ivotthitam
tava avamāna-prabhavaḥ = born out of your insult; krodhaḥ = anger; ayam = the; atulaḥ = incomparable; mama = to me; na śakyate dhārayitum = is intolerable; lavaṇa-ambhaḥ = the water of the salt water ocean; iva = like; utthitam = that intensifies on the Pūrṇimā.
Like the water of the salt water ocean that intensifies on the Pūrṇimā, the incomparable anger born out of your insult is intolerable to me.1
1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: lavaṇāmbhaḥ lavaṇa-samudrāmbhaḥ. utthitaṁ parvaṇy ulbaṇam.
GLOSS. [The glossator states that the second half of the first line can also be read as krodho yama-tulo mama which indicates that] Khara’s anger was equal to that of Yamarāja himself since he was a killer like Yama.
