Chapter 33: Śūrpaṇakhā Criticizes Rāvaṇa
Text 3.33.20
अप्रमत्तश्च यो राजा सर्वज्ञो विजितेन्द्रियः।
कृतज्ञो धर्मशीलश्च स राजा तिष्ठते चिरम्॥
apramattaś ca yo rājā sarvajño vijitendriyaḥ
kṛtajño dharma-śīlaś ca sa rājā tiṣṭhate ciram
apramattaḥ ca = alert; yaḥ = who; rājā = king; sarvajñaḥ = knows everything [that he needs to know]; vijita-indriyaḥ = who is fully sense controlled; kṛtajñaḥ = grateful; dharma-śīlaḥ = dhārmika in nature; ca = and; saḥ = the; rājā = a king; tiṣṭhate = can be; ciram = for a long time.
The alert king who knows everything [that he needs to know], who is fully sense controlled, grateful and dhārmika in nature can be a king for a long time.
