Text 3.40.2
तं पथ्यहितवक्तारं मारीचं राक्षसाधिपः।
अब्रवीत्परुषं वाक्यमयुक्तं कालचोदितः॥
taṁ pathya-hita-vaktāraṁ mārīcaṁ rākṣasādhipaḥ
abravīt paruṣaṁ vākyam ayuktaṁ kāla-coditaḥ
tam pathya-hita-vaktāram = who had spoken words that offered freedom from dangers and happiness; mārīcam = to Mārīca; rākṣasa-adhipaḥ = the ruler of the rākṣasas; abravīt = spoke; paruṣam = harsh; vākyam = words; ayuktam = and irrational; kāla-coditaḥ = impelled by the force of time.
Impelled by the force of time, the ruler of the rākṣasas spoke harsh and irrational words to Mārīca who had spoken words that offered freedom from dangers and happiness.
GLOSS. [Pathya-hita-vaktāram indicates that Mārīca] had spoken words that were as beneficial as a sick man’s adherence to a diet.
