Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 45: Sītā Chastises Lakṣmaṇa
Text 3.45.2
न हि मे हृदयं स्थाने जीवितं वावतिष्ठति।
क्रोशतः परमार्तस्य श्रुतः शब्दो मया भृशम्॥
na hi me hṛdayaṁ sthāne jīvitaṁ vāvatiṣṭhati
krośataḥ paramārtasya śrutaḥ śabdo mayā bhṛśam
na hi = not; me = My; hṛdayam = mind; sthāne = in their own places; jīvitam = life; vā = and; avatiṣṭhati = are; krośataḥ = of someone crying out; parama-ārtasya = in extreme pain; śrutaḥ = heard; śabdaḥ = the sound; mayā = I have; bhṛśam = clearly.
My mind and life are not in their own places. I have clearly heard the sound of someone crying out in extreme pain.1
“My mind and life are not in their own places” implies that she is becoming bewildered.
GLOSS. Krośataḥ can also indicate that the sound came from a distance of more than one krośa [which is said to be 4,000 cubits].1
