Chapter 45: Sītā Chastises Lakṣmaṇa
Text 3.45.39
तामार्तरूपां विमना रुदन्तीं सौमित्रिरालोक्य विशालनेत्राम्।
आश्वासयामास न चैव भर्तुस्तं भ्रातरं किंचिदुवाच सीता॥
tām ārta-rūpāṁ vimanā rudantīṁ
saumitrir ālokya viśāla-netrām
āśvāsayām āsa na caiva bhartus
taṁ bhrātaraṁ kiñcid uvāca sītā
tām = the; ārta-rūpām = and distressed in appearance; vimanāḥ = dejected; rudantīm = crying; saumitriḥ = Saumitri; ālokya = noticed; viśāla-netrām = wide-eyed lady; āśvāsayām āsa = He consoled her; na ca eva = not; bhartuḥ tam bhrātaram = to her brother-in-law; kiñcit = anything; uvāca = did speak; sītā = [but] Sītā-devī.
Dejected Saumitri noticed the wide-eyed lady crying and distressed in appearance. He consoled her [but] Sītā-devī did not speak anything to her brother-in-law.
She didn’t speak anything to Him out of anger because she thought, “He is delaying His departure [to help my husband] on the pretext of consoling me.”
