Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 46: Rāvaṇa Disguises Himself and Approaches Sītā
Text 3.46.1

tayā = [for] she; paruṣam = harsh words; uktaḥ tu = had spoken; kupitaḥ = angry; rāghava-anujaḥ = Rāghava’s younger brother; saḥ = He; vikāṅkṣan = unwillingly; bhṛśam = was very; rāmam = towards Rāma; pratasthe = set out; na cirāt = in hurry; iva = as if.

Rāghava’s younger brother was very angry [for] she had spoken harsh words. Unwillingly, He set out towards Rāma as if in a hurry.1

Now the author reveals the result of Sītā-devī’s rebuke of Lakṣmaṇa in eleven chapters. This chapter describes Rāvaṇa’s allurement [of Sītā-devī].

“As if in a hurry” implies that Lakṣmaṇa could not bear leaving Sītā-devī [alone] and so His feet were dragging [Him back to their āśrama] while His eagerness to go to Rāma pulled [Him forward to Rāma].

1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: vikāṅkṣan anicchann eva.
