Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 54: Rāvaṇa Brings Sītā to Laṅkā
Text 3.54.21
तत्रोष्यतां जनस्थाने शून्ये निहतराक्षसे।
पौरुषं बलमाश्रित्य त्रासमुत्सृज्य दूरतः॥
tatroṣyatāṁ janasthāne śūnye nihata-rākṣase
pauruṣaṁ balam āśritya trāsam utsṛjya dūrataḥ
tatra = there; uṣyatām = and live; janasthāne = Janasthāna; śūnye = is [now] vacant; nihata-rākṣase = [because] the rākṣasas have been killed; pauruṣam = your manly; balam = strength; āśritya = take advantage of; trāsam = your terror; utsṛjya = throw away; dūrataḥ = from a distance.
[Because] the rākṣasas have been killed, Janasthāna is [now] vacant. Take advantage of your manly strength, throw away your terror from a distance and live there.
1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: pauruṣaṁ balaṁ na kevalaṁ nīti-balam ity arthaḥ.
Rāvaṇa wants to tell them, “take advantage of your manly strength,” not just political strength.1 The reason for this is stated in the next verse.
