Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 55: Rāvaṇa Flatters Sītā
Text 3.55.38

एवमुक्त्वा दशग्रीवो मैथिलीं जनकात्मजाम्।
कृतान्तवशमापन्नो ममेयमिति मन्यते॥

evam uktvā daśagrīvo maithilīṁ janakātmajām
kṛtānta-vaśam āpanno mameyam iti manyate

evam = this; uktvā = after telling; daśagrīvaḥ = Daśagrīva; maithilīm = the princess of Mithilā; janaka-ātmajām = to Jānakī; kṛta-anta-vaśam = under the control of death; āpannaḥ = [because] he had come; mama = is [now] mine; iyam iti = this lady; manyate = thought.

After telling this to Jānakī, the princess of Mithilā, Daśagrīva thought, “This lady is [now] mine” [because] he had come under the control of death.1

[1] syād avāṅ apy adho-mukhaḥ. (Amara)

[2] ālekhyāścaryayoś citram. (Amara)

[3] parigrahaḥ kalatre syāt. (Śāśvata)

1 Rāvaṇa had come under the control of death, that is, he was to die soon. Therefore, his thinking had become perverted. This explains why he was convinced that Sītā was now his. We have already learnt from Rāmāyaṇa that before the evil die their intelligence becomes bewildered.
