Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 62: Rāma’s Mental Confusion
Text 3.62.13
निर्वीर्य इति लोको मां निर्दयश्चेति वक्ष्यति।
कातरत्वं प्रकाशं हि सीतापनयनेन मे॥
nirvīrya iti loko māṁ nirdayaś ceti vakṣyati
kātaratvaṁ prakāśaṁ hi sītāpanayanena me
nirvīryaḥ = am devoid of manly prowess; iti = that; lokaḥ = the world; mām = I; nirdayaḥ = [I am] devoid of compassion; ca = and; iti = that; vakṣyati = will say; kātaratvam = lack of sobriety; prakāśam = visible; hi = is clearly; sītā-apanayanena = since Sītā’s abduction; me = My.
The world will say that I am devoid of manly prowess and that [I am] devoid of compassion. My lack of sobriety is clearly visible since Sītā’s abduction.
“My lack of sobriety is clearly visible since Sītā’s abduction” means “My lack of sobriety is clearly visible because Sītā has been abducted and so I can’t hold on to My life!”
