Chapter 64: Rāma Discovers Some Clues About Sītā’s Whereabouts
Text 3.64.37

एवं स रुषितो रामो दिधक्षन्निव चक्षुषा।
ददर्श भूमौ निष्क्रान्तं राक्षसस्य पदं महत्॥

evaṁ sa ruṣito rāmo didhakṣann iva cakṣuṣā
dadarśa bhūmau niṣkrāntaṁ rākṣasasya padaṁ mahat

evam = thus; saḥ ruṣitaḥ = when was angry; rāmaḥ = Śrī Rāma; didhakṣan iva = and when it appeared that He wanted to burn up [the entire world]; cakṣuṣā = with His eyes; dadarśa = He saw; bhūmau = on the ground; niṣkrāntam = visible; rākṣasasya = of a rākṣasa; padam = footprint; mahat = a large.

When Śrī Rāma was thus angry and when it appeared that He wanted to burn up [the entire world] with His eyes, He saw a large footprint of a rākṣasa visible on the ground.1

He hadn’t seen this before.
