Chapter 68: Jaṭāyu’s Liberation
Text 3.68.19
तं गृध्रं प्रेक्ष्य ताम्राक्षं गतासुमचलोपमम्।
रामः सुबहुभिर्दुःखैर्दीनः सौमित्रिमब्रवीत्॥
taṁ gṛdhraṁ prekṣya tāmrākṣaṁ gatāsum acalopamam
rāmaḥ subahubhir duḥkhair dīnaḥ saumitrim abravīt
tam = him; gṛdhram = the vulture’s; prekṣya = upon seeing; tāmra-akṣam = eyes were coppery; gata-asum = his life-airs had departed; acala-upamam = and he looked like a mountain; rāmaḥ = Lord Rāma; subahubhiḥ = due to so many; duḥkhaiḥ = causes of distress; dīnaḥ = became miserable; saumitrim = to Saumitri; abravīt = and spoke [as follows].
The vulture’s eyes were coppery. His life-airs had departed and he looked like a mountain. Upon seeing him, Lord Rāma became miserable due to so many causes of distress and spoke to Saumitri [as follows].
The vulture’s eyes were coppery because of the agitation caused by his falling on the ground while his head faced down.
