Text 3.74.8
कच्चित्ते निर्जिता विघ्नाः कच्चित्ते वर्धते तपः।
कच्चित्ते नियतः क्रोध आहारश्च तपोधने॥
kaccit te nirjitā vighnāḥ kaccit te vardhate tapaḥ
kaccit te niyataḥ krodha āhāraś ca tapo-dhane
kaccit te = have you; nirjitāḥ = overcome; vighnāḥ = the obstacles to your austerities; kaccit te = have you; vardhate = increased; tapas = your austerities; kaccit te = have you; niyataḥ = restrained; krodhaḥ = your anger; āhāraḥ = eating; ca = and; tapas-dhane = O lady whose wealth is austerity.
O lady whose wealth is austerity, have you overcome the obstacles to your austerities? Have you increased your austerities? Have you restrained your anger and eating?
The obstacles to austerities are lust and so on. Regarding restraining one’s eating, the Śruti states—tapo nānaśanāt param: “There is no austerity superior to fasting.”
