Chapter 1: Contents of the Rāmāyaṇa Summarized
Text 1.1.49

अनादृत्य तु तद्वाक्यं रावणः कालचोदितः।
जगाम सहमारीचस्तस्याश्रमपदं तदा॥

anādṛtya tu tad-vākyaṁ rāvaṇaḥ kāla-coditaḥ
jagāma saha-mārīcas tasyāśrama-padaṁ tadā

anādṛtya tu = disregarding; tad-vākyam = Mārīca’s words; rāvaṇaḥ = Rāvaṇa; kāla-coditaḥ = impelled by death; jagāma = arrived; saha-mārīcaḥ = with Mārīca; tasya = that Rāma’s; āśrama-padam = āśrama; tadā = immediately.

Disregarding Mārīca’s words, Rāvaṇa, impelled by death, immediately arrived at that Rāma’s āśrama with Mārīca.

“That Rāma” refers to Rāma who was famous for killing Khara, Dūṣaṇa and others. Āśrama-padam indicates that Rāvaṇa and Mārīca went to the place of Rāma’s āśrama.1

1 They went near Rāma’s āśrama; they did not enter that āśrama. Mārīca changed his form to that of a deer, entered the āśrama, attracted Sītā-devī’s attention and ran away. On Sītā’s pleas, Rāma chased that deer and killed it. After Sītā sent Lakṣmaṇa to search for Rāma, Rāvaṇa then changed his form to that of a mendicant and went inside the āśrama.
