Chapter 1: Contents of the Rāmāyaṇa Summarized
Text 1.1.63

उत्स्मयित्वा महाबाहुः प्रेक्ष्य चास्थि महाबलः।
पादाङ्गुष्ठेन चिक्षेप सम्पूर्णं दसयोजनम्॥

ut smayitvā mahā-bāhuḥ prekṣya cāsthi mahā-balaḥ
pādāṅguṣṭhena cikṣepa sampūrṇaṁ dasa-yojanam

ut = up and away; smayitvā = smiled and; mahā-bāhuḥ = the mighty-armed Rāma; prekṣya ca = seeing; asthi = the bones of Dundubhi; mahā-balaḥ = of great strength; pāda-aṅguṣṭhena = with His toe; cikṣepa = kicked the body; sampūrṇam = to a distance of; dasa-yojanam = 10 yojanas.

Seeing the bones of Dundubhi, the mighty-armed Rāma of great strength smiled and with His toe kicked the body up and away to a distance of 10 yojanas.

Rāma was of great strength, that is, His strength was immeasurable. He was mighty-armed, that is, His arms were capable of executing work with the required strength. He smiled when He saw Dundubhi’s bones and thought, “Is this all?”

Vālī had kicked it with his foot; Rāma kicked it with His toe. Vālī had thrown it to a distance of 200 dhanus; Rāma threw it to a distance of 10 yojanas.

NOTE. Vāyu Purāṇa (8.103-104) states—catur hastaṁ dhanuḥ.. aṣṭau dhanuḥ sahasrāṇi yojanaṁ: “Four cubits equal one dhanu. Eight thousand dhanus equal one yojana.”
