ततोऽगर्जयद्धरिवरः सुग्रीवो हेमपिङ्गलः।
तेन नादेन महता निर्जगाम हरीश्वरः॥
tato ’garjayad dhari-varaḥ sugrīvo hema-piṅgalaḥ
tena nādena mahatā nirjagāma harīśvaraḥ
tataḥ = after reaching Kiṣkindhā; agarjayat = roared; hari-varaḥ = the best of monkeys; sugrīvaḥ = Sugrīva; hema-piṅgalaḥ = of a golden and reddish brown complexion; tena = that; nādena = hearing mahatā = greatl nirjagāma = came out to face him; hari-iśvaraḥ = the Lord of the monkeys Vālī.
After reaching Kiṣkindhā, the best of monkeys Sugrīva of a golden and reddish brown complexion roared. Hearing that great roar, the Lord of the monkeys Vālī came out [to face him].
1 In other words, the usage is sarcastic.
Sugrīva is called the best of monkeys here because that is how he thought of himself.1 [He had been pale and discolored,] but out of delight he was no longer pale in complexion—he was of a golden and reddish brown complexion. Vālī heard a great roar, a roar that he had never ever heard before. So, he came out of his home.
