Chapter 1: Contents of the Rāmāyaṇa Summarized

ततः प्रीतमनास्तेन विश्वस्तः स महाकपिः।
किष्किन्धां रामसहितो जगाम च गुहां तदा॥
tataḥ prīta-manās tena viśvastaḥ sa mahā-kapiḥ
kiṣkindhāṁ rāma-sahito jagāma ca guhāṁ tadā
tataḥ = after this incident; prīta-manāḥ = became pleased in mind; tena = because of Rāma’s act; viśvastaḥ = and became confident of him; saḥ mahā-kapiḥ = the great monkey Sugrīva; kiṣkindhām = Kiṣkindhā; rāma-sahitaḥ = with Rāma; jagāma = went this time; ca = again; guhām = to the cavelike; tadā = at that time.
After this incident, the great monkey Sugrīva became pleased in mind because of Rāma’s act and became confident of Him. At that time, he again went to the cavelike city, Kiṣkindhā, [this time] with Rāma.
Seeing Rāmacandra’s superhuman activity, Sugrīva became pleased in his mind, thinking that he would quickly attain his kingdom. He became confident that Lord Rāma is certainly capable of killing Vālī. Nārada Muni refers to Sugrīva as mahā-kapiḥ (“the great monkey”) because he [already] considered himself the king of the monkeys. Guhām indicates that Kiṣkindhā was a city in the middle of a mountain, like a cave.
