Chapter 1: Contents of the Rāmāyaṇa Summarized
Text 1.1.79
तेन गत्वा पुरीं लङ्कां हत्वा रावणमाहवे।
रामः सीतामनु प्राप्य परां व्रीडामुपागमत्॥
tena gatvā purīṁ laṅkāṁ hatvā rāvaṇam āhave
rāmaḥ sītām anu prāpya parāṁ vrīḍām upāgamat
tena = on that bridge; gatvā = went; purīm = to the city; laṅkām = of Laṅkā; hatvā = killed; rāvaṇam = Rāvaṇa; āhave = in battle; rāmaḥ = Rāma; sītām = Sītā; anu = then; prāpya = met and; parām = greatly; vrīḍām = embarrassed; upāgamat = became.
Rāma then went on that bridge to the city of Laṅkā, killed Rāvaṇa in battle, met Sītā and then became greatly embarrassed.
To show His prowess, Rāma killed His enemy and then obtained Sītā. After that, He became embarrassed in apprehension of worldly criticism and thought, “How can I accept a woman who had stayed at another’s house?”
