Chapter 1: Contents of the Rāmāyaṇa Summarized
Text 1.1.87

नन्दिग्रामे जटां हित्वा भ्रातृभिः सहितोऽनघः।
रामः सीतामनुप्राप्य राज्यं पुनरवाप्तवान्॥

nandigrāme jaṭāṁ hitvā bhrātṛbhiḥ sahito ’naghaḥ
rāmaḥ sītām anuprāpya rājyaṁ punar avāptavān

nandigrāme = at Nandigrāma; jaṭām = His matted hair; hitvā = he gave up; bhrātṛbhiḥ = His brothers; sahitaḥ = [Reunited] with; anaghaḥ = was free from distress; rāmaḥ = Rāma; sītām anuprāpya = with Sītā beside Him; rājyam = His kingdom; punaḥ = again; avāptavān = He obtained.

[Reunited] with His brothers, Rāma was free from distress. At Nandigrāma, He gave up His matted hair. [Then], He again obtained His kingdom with Sītā beside Him.

[Anaghaḥ is derived from anagha, the antonym of] agha, which can mean “distress” or “sin” or “calamity” [56]. Rāma was free from distress for He had completely carried out his father’s instructions. [He had been especially eager to meet Bharata because] even when Bharata had come to Citrakūṭa and pleaded that Rāma should take back the kingdom, Rāma didn’t [57].

When Rāma was with His brothers, His cherished desires were fulfilled. He had once told Lakṣmaṇa:

kadā nv ahaṁ sameṣyāmi bharatena mahātmanā
śatrughnena ca vīreṇa tvayā ca raghu-nandana

“When will I be with the great soul Bharata, the heroic Śatrughna and You, O descendant of Raghu?” (Rāmāyaṇa 3.16.40)

At Nandigrāma, He gave up His matted hair [as it will be noted]:

viśodhita-jaṭaḥ snātaś citra-mālyānulepanaḥ
mahārha-vasano rāmas tasthau tatra śriyā jvalan

“Having shed His matted hair, having bathed, having put on colorful garland and fragrances, dressed in a greatly valuable attire, Rāma stood there, shining in beauty.” (Rāmāyaṇa 6.131.15)

As described in the following verse, Rāma sat on a divine throne with Sītā and was coronated as the king [of Ayodhyā]:

tataḥ sa prayato vṛddho vasiṣṭho brāhmaṇaiḥ saha
rāmaṁ ratnamaye pīṭhe saha-sītaṁ nyaveśayat

“And then, the elderly Vasiṣṭha and the brāhmaṇas carefully had Rāma sit with Sītā on the throne bedecked with jewels.” (Rāmāyaṇa 6.131.60)

Prior to his father’s instruction [exiling Him into the forest], Rāma had gotten the throne. Now He obtained it again, in a grander manner.
