Chapter 14: The Aśvamedha Sacrifice
Text 1.14.44
उद्गात्रे वै तथोदीचीं दक्षिणैषा विनिर्मिता
हयमेधे महायज्ञे स्वयम्भूविहिते पुरा
udgātre vai tathodīcīṁ dakṣiṇaiṣā vinirmitā
hayamedhe mahā-yajñe svayam-bhū-vihite purā
udgātre vai = to the udgātā priest; tathā udīcīm = he gave the northern portion; dakṣiṇā = of dakṣiṇā; eṣā = such gifting; vinirmitā = has been prescribed; hayamedhe = Aśvamedha; mahā-yajñe = for the great sacrifice; svayam-bhū-vihite = conducted by the self-born Lord Brahmā himself; purā = which was previously.
He gave the northern portion to the Udgātā priest. Such gifting of dakṣiṇā has been prescribed for the great Aśvamedha sacrifice which was previously conducted by the self-born Lord Brahmā himself.
Such gifting of dakṣiṇā has been prescribed by the Āpastamba-sūtra and other authoritative scriptures [29]. This was originally conducted by Lord Brahmā himself quote30.
