Chapter 14: The Aśvamedha Sacrifice
Text 1.14.53

ततस्ते न्यायतः कृत्वा प्रविभागं द्विजोत्तमाः।
सुप्रीतमनसः सर्वे प्रत्यूचुर्मुदिता भृशम्॥

tatas te nyāyataḥ kṛtvā pravibhāgaṁ dvijottamāḥ
suprīta-manasaḥ
sarve pratyūcur muditā bhṛśam

tataḥ = then; te = those; nyāyataḥ = according to scripture; kṛtvā pravibhāgam = divided it; dvija-uttamāḥ = best of the twice-born; suprīta-manasaḥ = with very happy minds; sarve = all of them; pratyūcuḥ = thanked the king; muditāḥ = delighted; bhṛśam = and extremely.

Then, those best of the twice-born divided it according to scripture, and extremely delighted with very happy minds, all of them thanked the king.

They divided the dakṣiṇā according to scriptural regulation: Half of the gift given to the adhvaryu priest should be given to the pratiprasthātā priest who assists the adhvaryu priest, a third to the neṣṭā priest who officiates in the savana sacrifices and a fourth to the unnetā priest who offers the soma during the sacrifices [32]. The gift was divided under the leadership of Ṛśyaśṛṅga and Vasiṣṭha. They were very pleased, and it is understood that they explicitly informed the king of that.

[32] yāvad adhvaryave dadāti tad-ardhaṁ pratiprasthātre tṛtīyaṁ neṣṭre caturtham unnetre etenetareṣāṁ dānam uktaṁ bhavati.
