Bāla-kāṇḍa
Chapter 14: The Aśvamedha Sacrifice
Text 54

ततः प्रसर्पकेभ्यस्तु हिरण्यं सुसमाहितः।
जाम्बुनदं कोटिसङ्ख्यं ब्राह्मणेभ्यो ददौ तदा॥

tataḥ prasarpakebhyas tu hiraṇyaṁ susamāhitaḥ
jāmbunadaṁ
koṭi-saṅkhyaṁ brāhmaṇebhyo dadau tadā

tataḥ = then; prasarpakebhyaḥ tu = who had come to see the sacrifice; hiraṇyam = gold coins; susamāhitaḥ = with full attention; jāmbunadam = each as brilliant as the river Jambū; koṭi-saṅkhyam = 10,000,000; brāhmaṇebhyaḥ = to brāhmaṇas; dadau tadā = with full attention, the king bestowed in charity.

Then, with full attention, the king bestowed in charity 10,000,000 gold coins, each as brilliant as the river Jambū, to brāhmaṇas who had come to see the sacrifice.

The Śruti prescribes that all members of a sacrifice should be given charity [33].

[33] yāvanto vai sadasyās te sarve dakṣiṇyāḥ.
